Annual Report 2022

Fortunately, 2022 was a quieter year than the two previous years. The children had missed two years of education. Unfortunately, when they finally returned this year, it was painfully clear. Many of them, even those in high school, have completely forgotten how to read. For starters, English is not their native language. But to succeed in today's world, it's essential that they learn it. We are convinced that if our children learn to speak English fluently and learn to work with the computer, they will get a job - even if they do not finish their formal education!

Annoyingly, the government did not allow children to repeat the schoolyear. So we tried to give the children as much basic knowledge as possible in the remaining months of the school year!

Further Education

We had applied for further education for six students. Because this time there were some cheaper courses, we were eventually able to realize a further education for ten students.

For Isha Dhurve and Simran Shrivas, the third year of nursing training has been requested. Due to corona, the second year only started in January. They are both doing very well. The third year for Saloni Dhurve ended less well. She dropped but is going to do the year again. Fortunately, there was a budget so that she could participate again.

Muskan and Swati in front of Prakash Institute

Swati Khobragade wanted to start the hotel management course but missed a course at the Junior College course, which meant that she could not be admitted. Swati started training as a preschool teacher where she is very well placed and has a great time. When we visited her we were very impressed by the beautiful creative drawings she made.

Muskan Ansari went with Swati to Prakash Institute. She follows a training in which she is introduced to all kinds of computer programs. Both girls are staying in Prakash's hostel.

Sejal in her room in Hislop's hostel

Sejal Shrivas graduated from Junior College and moved on to the Bachelor Commerce course, on her way to becoming a chartered accountant which she would love to become. Sejal lives in the hostel at Hislop College.

For Karan Uikey, the preliminary training for the army at the Tango Charlie Academy was planned. However, he turned out to be too young to start. That's why we recently placed him with a personal trainer. He receives physical training 7 days a week, 2 hours a day. To be admitted to the police or the army you have to do physical tests including running. The best are admitted so a good condition is essential. In addition, he goes for two hours a day to theory lessons that prepare him for the theory part of the test. Karan is doing Junior College in parallel.

Yogesh Ojha

Yogesh Ojha

Yash Khobragde is a bit older and also wants to join the army. Together with Karan, we placed him at the personal trainer and the theory lessons . Yash also works in catering.

Ashish Korram has started the bachelor's degree in Electronics at Anjuman College. This training was also cheaper than planned.

Finally , Yogesh Ojha. He helps with the administration of the school and has started the Junior College course.

Anil Jadav, a smart boy, has been with us since he was 2 years old. He passed his bachelor's degree in BCCA and is now in college, but still lives in our hostel. He did an internship in our accounting last year. Anil is sponsored by someone from the locals who has paid for his entire education.

Nav-Jeevan's policy is to help our children until they stand on their own two feet and tell us they don't need our help anymore. We do that for many of our children. Next school year we will be able to offer a number of children a follow-up training.

Passed in 2022

In 2022, all 29 students passed their Highschool. That is quite an achievement given the two years of corona that preceded this. Thanks to the teachers, who were as motivated as ever, prepared the children for their exams.

Furthermore, the afore mentioned students Sejal and Ashish passed the Junior College exam. They followed their education at another school while staying with us in the hostel.

Construction of the hostel

The construction of the hostel for boys, financed by the AFAS foundation, has finally been completed after a lot of setbacks. The heat in the summer months and the huge rain showers during and after the rainy season caused enormous delays. At the moment, all that remains is painting.

Financial Situation of Nav-Jeevan

The total costs per month are € 14,000. This is € 168,000 per year. Because we received € 43,000 less per year from the Tribal Department in recent years and the prices have risen enormously, we have run into problems with paying salaries and meals.

Coverage Plan

We have a fixed income of € 3,500 per month from sponsorand in the Netherlands. In addition, in India we have € 3,584 per month from paying parents and the local population. For teacher salaries, we found two sponsors, the Calder Holding and RATM,-. They will each contribute € 20,000 for 2023.

In India, many donations are made in kind: such as rice, eggs and milk. Now we are still looking for one or a number of sponsors for € 3,000 per month for meals for the children. We are confident that this will succeed.

The budget then looks like this:

  • € 3,500 per month / € 42,000 per year: regular donors in the Netherlands
  • € 3,584 per month / € 43,000 per year: parents in India + donations from the Indian population (partly still to be recruited)
  • € 1,667 per month / € 20,000 per year: for salaries of Calder Holding for 2023
  • € 1,667 per month / € 20,000 per year: for salaries of RATM for 2023
  • € 584 per month / € 7,000 per year: from the Tribal Departement
  • € 3,000 per month / € 36,000 per year: for meals (to be recruited)

Total: € 14,000 per month / € 168,000 per year.

This amounts to a contribution of € 50,000 by Nav Jeevan Sanstha India and € 118,000 by Stichting Nav-Jeevan Nederland.

Dillemma

From next school year (September 2023) the education system will change and the exams after class 10 (high school) will expire and exams can only be taken after class 12 (Junior College). The Tribal Department has set the requirement that only Tribal children can participate when we start Junior College, with an 11th and 12th grade. That means a lot of extra costs. We are figuring out all the options, including the option to no longer serve these Tribal children. Of course, we are no longer a school if the children cannot take an exam. Decisions on this will be taken in the course of 2023. We remain committed to maintaining that status, both through fundraising in the Netherlands and through continued pressure on the Tribal Department in India itself.
