Annual report 2019

Exams, successful in 2019

In 2019, 7 students from Dr. T.S. Wilkinson High School and Junior College got their Junior College diploma and 4 students got their High School diploma.
For two serious children who are really among the poorest, we have decided to pay for further education. They both started in August. We have found a sponsor for both children.
Anil Jadhav, a child without a mother, whose father is a drunken ragpicker, came to us when he was 3 years old. We found a sponsor from India for him. Anil scored 86.77% in grade 12 with only lessons at school and no extra lessons. That is really very high. Anil is now doing the BCCA course, a 3-year education bachelor in Commerce and Computer Application at a prestigious private school. In the first examination period he became second among 93 students of rich descent. Anil lives in the hostel and goes up and down by bus every day. When he comes back he studies behind the computer. Take a look at our new video film from October 2019 on our website. Anil is central in this video. The video can also be seen on YouTube

Saloni Dhurve is the second student to receive a good education. She is sponsored by myself. Saloni is doing the 3-year nurse training at Mure Memorial hospital.

After this school year there are again a number of very poor children who would like to follow a course. At least 3 children and maybe one more. Isha Dhurve and Simran Shrivas also want to do the nurse training at the Mume Memorial hospital, a 3-year course, costs 1,550 euros per year and Yash Khobragade the Tango Charlie Army, Police Career Academy, a 1-year pre-education to be admitted to become army, police etc. (costs 662 euros for a year). We are still looking for sponsors for them. Perhaps you are considering sponsoring one of these 3 students. Maybe you can do it together with one or more family members or friends. We will in any case also try to see whether they can qualify for a scholarship from one of the Dutch funds.

An overview of the donors of Nav-Jeevan Foundaton in 2019

(see also the financial overview at the bottom of this report)

Regular donors
The Nav-Jeevan Foundation has a large number of regular donors who donate a monthly amount. This concerns family members, friends and acquaintances of the board members and employees of Calder Holding.

Calder Holding loyal sponsor from 2003
From the outset, Calder Holding has doubled every euro that its staff donates. We are very happy with this loyal sponsor.

People are central to the companies in Calder Holding. They work for and with people. From Inactive to Active is their motto. Their vision is that people want to be meaningful and that participation in society is the best way to do this. Together with their 900 enthusiastic employees, they help hundreds of clients in Education, Care or Work every day.

Advocation Foundation for the (very) young child.
Since 2013, the Nav-Jeevan Foundation has been receiving an annual contribution from the Advocation Foundation for the (very) young child. In 2019, for example, we again received a contribution of 15,000 euros for food, uniforms, etc. They also again allocated an amount of 15,000 euros for 2020.

We received an amount of 1,080 from de Heutink foundation for the annual salary of Dolly Nandeshwar. She provides dance lessons on Saturdays and Sundays.

Their motto: Every child deserves a chance to shine!

From the proceeds from the Third World Flea Market at Mill Hill College we received 5,500 euros for the purchase of benches with tables, teacher tables, storage cupboards and an electronic water conditioner.

The connection with the third world comes from their history. It used to be Mill-Hill of the monastic order "The fathers of Mill Hill". These monks were trained to work in Third World countries. They still feel connected to people in the third world and want to actively promote this.

From AFAS we received the commitment of 70,000 euros for the construction of a hostel. This money will be available in 2020 as soon as we have found land and have started construction.

The AFAS Foundation inspires and does. It inspires you to do better. Where you see opportunities to do better than is happening now. Always with major consequences. Because it helps a lot of people. Or precisely because it inspires many people to change.

We have also received a commitment from the book fair of the Vincentius Association Den Bosch for the furnishing of a gym / fitness room. This contribution is expected at the end of March.

The Vincentius Association 's-Hertogenbosch offers direct and personal assistance to families and single people who live in poverty or are in danger of ending up there.

In 2019 we were also able to buy a second large school bus through a private gift. This was desperately needed because the children come from different parts of Nagpur.

Finally, we have been selected for the coffee box project of the Protestant Congregation Samen op weg Berlicum-Rosmalen. From October 2019 there is a collection bus in the church every Sunday. The proceeds are for Nav-Jeevan. The contribution is expected in 2020.

Worries about the future

At the start of the 2019-2020 school year, we had almost 500 children in school. More than 200 of them stay at the hostel. We are a bit worried about the future.
We were very happy with the tribal project that started in 2015. And Tech Mahindra also started sponsoring. This meant that Nav Jeevan Sanstha was no longer dependent solely on donations from the Netherlands. Unfortunately Tech Mahindra will reduce its donation in the coming year from around 37,000 to around 22,000 euros. They will no longer contribute to the salaries with the exception of the project coordinator, the sports teacher and the computer teacher. They will continue to sponsor the rest. This will start on 1-4-2020.

There are also quite a few outstanding accounts.

Since 2013, the Nav-Jeevan Foundation has been receiving an annual contribution from the Advocacy Foundation for the (very) young child. In 2019, for example, we again received a contribution of 15,000 euros for food, uniforms, etc. They also again allocated an amount of 15,000 euros for 2020. This will be the last year because they will stop. This is very unfortunate because it is one of the few funds that make a contribution to food. The goals must almost always be concrete projects. We will have to set up a special recruitment to close this gap.

Fortunately, Kiran and Roger Wingelaar are also committed to recruiting sponsors in the United States.
In addition, Iris Wilkinson and Aneeta Patel have also admitted a number of paying children.

We are all going to ensure that Nav-Jeevan remains a healthy institution.

What you can do to help us.

  • Bring the project to the attention of your family, friends and acquaintances and ask them to become sponsors.
  • Approch your child's school or a company you know and ask them to contribute. Of course we would like to come by to provide information.
  • If you know someone who will soon have an anniversary, ask him / her to ask for a donation to Nav Jeevan instead of gifts. Or maybe it's your birthday soon and you're thinking of doing the same. If you need a nice collection box with photos of Nav-Jeevan for this occasion, please let us know.

Board 2019

The board of Nav-Jeevan was expanded in 2019 with two new members: Miriam van der Sloot and Hans van der Sloot.
Cees van der Flier quits. He has been treasurer from the start in 2003. We thank him very much for his efforts over the past 17 years.

The new distribution of management functions is as follows:

  • Aura Laumen, chairman (was previously secretary)
  • Miriam van der Sloot, secretary (new)
  • Annelies van de Ven, treasurer (was previously chairman)
  • Tom Verhoeven, website
  • Hans van der Sloot, recruiting schools and companies

Volunteer: Swatee Span (information)

In our previous newsletter we indicated that we want to send the newsletter by e-mail from now on. Many donors have already done this. If you have not done this yet, you would still like to do this to avandeven@home.nl or nav-jeevan@home.nl. For the Calder staff, preferably your private email address. And if you have a partner or children who would also like to be kept informed, then also provide their email address.
If you prefer to receive the newsletter on paper in the future, please let me know.

We conclude with a message from the director of the school, Vicky Simon.

My Journey at Navjeevan

"Time seems to fly, it never travels faster than one day at a time""

So here’s my journey of 4380 days at Dr. T.S Wilkinson Memorial High School and Junior College Godhni, run by Navjeevan Sanstha. A big thank you for choosing me to head this special institution as all my 12 years of service turned out to be special in all aspects from bridging the gap between the educated and the uneducated, the literate and the illiterate, the privileged and the under privileged, the powerful and the weak thus creating a huge impact in making the lives of the children Better, Bright and Beautiful.

I begin by thanking the donors who have kept Navjeevan’s life by their kind gestures for all these years planting seeds to bloom into lovely flowers. May God Bless you all to continue this service for as long as you can. You all are a part of Navjeevan and will always be.

My association with Navjeevan started in Nov. 2008. My journey till date has been exciting and a bundle of joy as it grew from 50 plus students to 466 today. This was not only memorable but a challenging task as the school was running on the concept of literacy. With a united effort and a combination of bright far-sighted persons like the stalwarts Mrs. Iris Wilkinson and Mrs. Aneeta P. Patel the school progressed step by step slowly but surely and steadily.

It was during my regime that the proposal for school recognition was submitted and after a couple of years we received the recognition by the State Government in the year 2013. This was a herculean task but with the help of Mrs. Aneeta P. Patel we were able to succeed and the school was transferred from a literacy concept to a full-fledged school. It was a joy to see our students appearing from our school, earlier I had to take permission from the schools to send them to St. Ursula School and St. Michael School to sit for their board exams so that they do not waste a year. In 2015 we got the permission to start Junior College in the 3 streams- Arts, Science, and Commerce in two mediums, Hindi and English. It became the only school in Godhni having two mediums of instructions.

In my tenure I have seen the school change- 100% results in the Xth Board exam, the addition of tribal children, the science labs, the library, more classrooms etc. The school has also progressed and excelled in academics, sports and cultural activities and has every time been applauded for its excellent performances. Science exhibitions, language display, History, Geography presentation, maths made easy were organized annually and many more.

"All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy". We organize Bal Mela every year on 14th November on the birthday of 1st Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, celebrated in India as Children’s Day. Bal Mela which means children’s carnival is for a day full of fun and also a kind of fund raising as the amount collected is utilized for the school with the permission of the management.

All these were a success. My work was to bring the school on par with the other schools and I feel I succeeded to a certain extent.

I thank each one for placing their trust in me and for making my journey from 2008 to 2020 a path of utmost satisfaction. It is a blessing to see the school grow in leaps and bounds, I earnestly pray that the school continues to climb the pinnacle of glory.

Last but not the least, my sincere gratitude to the kindhearted, loving and humble Annelies and Tom who made things run smoothly and honestly and for being there strong in times of need. They always came up with projects which are beneficial for the school and saw that it was executed. Their keen interest, their cooperation and their love has kept the school in warm and healthy sunshine. Nothing can be done single handed, it’s only the united efforts of all those who are connected to the school directly or indirectly, and the results can be seen...

All this could not be done without the kind loving Hands of the Almighty who guided us and showed us the path of righteousness and joy.

I am blessed and honored to be in a school where I could be of help to humanity and where I was able to bring it to a position where it can stand tall with pride & to see its children bloom in the perfect light to knowledge and understanding and moving away - "From darkness to Light".

   My Journey Here Ends...
